Tony Rothman's anti-physical Tandava

Beitragvon Solkar » Donnerstag 16. Februar 2012, 16:38

In Hindu mythology Tandava is a dance performed by divine entity Shiva; the spiritual meaning of that dance is often wrongfully limited to the process of exhaustive destruction only.

It is unknown to the author of this article if Tony Rothman's last year's anti-physical Tandava performance at American Scientist website

The Man Behind the Curtain - Physics is not always the seamless subject that it pretends to be

was caused by some divine hippie legacy popping up in Dr. Rothman's overly creative head or by a profane sudden attack of late, but overly devious, midlife crisis panic.

But because his spur of the moment meanwhile even made its way into printed media, namely German Spektrum der Wissenschaft Feb 2012 issue, let's shift aside curtains of hookah steam for a moment and have a look at the essence of Tony's insights.

Tony Rothman hat geschrieben:Nevertheless, as a physicist travels along his (in this case) career, the hairline cracks in the edifice become more apparent, as does the dirt swept under the rug, the fudges and the wholesale swindles, with the disconcerting result that the totality occasionally appears more like Bruegel’s Tower of Babel as dreamt by a modern slumlord, a ramshackle structure of compartmentalized models soldered together into a skewed heap of explanations as the whole jury-rigged monstrosity tumbles skyward.
 It's all in vain. O miserere nobis!

But who's the culprit?

Tony Rothman hat geschrieben: In the first week or two of any freshman physics course, students are exposed to the force of friction. They learn that friction impedes the motion of objects and that it is caused by the microscope interaction of the two surfaces sliding past one another.

Well... wtf do the methods used for lecturing freshmen have to do with the consistency of physical thinking as a whole? :?

But wait!

Of course, Tony has more on that:

Tony Rothman hat geschrieben: the incompatibility of the irreversible second law with the other fundamental theories remains perhaps the greatest paradox in all physics. It is blatantly dropped into the first days of a freshman course and the textbook authors bat not an eyelash.
Oh, now I see - it's THEM again!
THEY, this time incarnated as lecturers and "the textbook authors", do not bat an eyelash pursuing their oppressive course of action.

So it doesn't come as a surprise that those devious THEY are, of course, eager to

Tony Rothman hat geschrieben: It seems to me that such an approach is both intellectually dishonest and fails to stimulate the habits of inquiry and skepticism that science is meant to engender.
discourage creative thinking wherever it pops up - QED.

Now let's try to figure out what Tony-proper freshman courses would be:

Taking this
Tony Rothman hat geschrieben: If Newton’s laws are at the bottom of everything, then one should be able to derive the second law of thermodynamics from Newtonian mechanics,
into account, we arrive at

"Good morning, ladies and gents!

Ye who have entered here, abandon all hope that we will ever teach you Newtonian mechanics!
Because Newton has not described everything, he has violated
Dr. Rothman's first commandment
Thou shalt not postulate anything, unless you can deduce everything from a single principle!

Sorry for inconvenience,
Farewell!"

Gruß,
Uli
